FEMA will not decide your housing until your insurer does

Two programs, one household. The order you file in decides how fast either one pays.

FEMA says you may qualify for disaster assistance even if you have insurance, after you file with your insurer and submit the settlement or denial letter. The NFIP flood policy pays nothing toward temporary housing or additional living expenses.

Why file a flood claim that pays nothing toward housing?

What does each program pay for?

FEMA sets a period of assistance and a maximum award each fiscal year. We do not print those figures here because they change; confirm the current ones on FEMA's Individuals and Households Program page before you plan around them.

The assumption that costs the most

Households treat FEMA as the program that fills whatever the policy leaves. FEMA is a program for needs that insurance does not cover, decided after the insurer decides, and it recovers anything paid twice for the same night. The fastest path is one file per program from the first night, with the insurer's letter moving from one to the other the day it arrives.

What to do this week

  1. File the homeowners claim and, if you have one, the flood claim on the same day.
  2. Register with FEMA at the same time; do not wait for the letter to register.
  3. Keep every lodging folio in both files, marked with which program it was submitted to.
  4. When the settlement or denial letter arrives, send it to FEMA that day.
  5. Read what a flood policy does and does not pay for if the loss involved water from outside the home.
